How long should a coaching session be?
Most one-to-one coaching sessions last between 45 and 60 minutes. Many coaches book 50 minutes inside a one-hour slot, so ten minutes stay free for notes and a short break before the next client.
The short answer is 45 to 60 minutes
A one-to-one coaching session usually lasts between 45 and 60 minutes. That range suits most life, business and executive coaching, and most private lessons in sport and music.
The one-hour session is the unit the coaching profession itself uses. The International Coaching Federation (ICF) Global Coaching Study, run with PwC, reports what coaches charge for a one-hour session, so clients and coaches tend to think in hours.
Many coaches book 50 minutes inside that hour. Therapists have worked this way for decades: the 45 or 50 minute session leaves ten or fifteen minutes to write notes, reply to messages and take a breath before the next client. The same habit works well for a coach with clients back to back.
Common coaching session lengths and when to use them
30 minutes
A focused check-in between longer sessions, a quick review before a deadline, or a lesson for a young child whose attention fades sooner. Agree one topic in advance, because there is no time to find one in the room.
45 to 50 minutes
The most practical length for a coach who sees several clients in a day. It fits a one-hour calendar slot and leaves room for notes before the next person arrives.
60 minutes
The standard for life, business and executive coaching, and for many adult private lessons. Long enough to settle in, work on one real problem and agree next steps without rushing.
90 minutes
A first session, a goal-setting session at the start of a block, or a review at the end of one. Longer sessions work best when they are occasional and planned, not the weekly default.
What decides the right length for your clients
There is no rule that one length is correct. Four practical questions settle it for most coaches.
What does the client need to get done?
Talking through a career decision needs room. Practising one tennis stroke or one passage of music often needs less time and more repetition across the week.
How long can the client stay focused?
Children, beginners and clients doing hard physical work usually tire before an hour is up. A shorter, sharper session often teaches more.
How often do you meet?
Weekly clients can have shorter sessions because little time passes between them. A client seen once a month usually needs a full hour to catch up and plan.
What does your diary need?
If you see five clients in a day, the gaps between sessions matter as much as the sessions. Choose a length that leaves time for notes, travel or a reset.
Keep the ten minutes after each session
The minutes after a session are where the next session gets better.
Write down what you worked on, what the client agreed to do before next time and anything personal they mentioned. Two or three lines written straight away are worth more than a page written on Sunday night, when the details have gone.
Those notes also tell you whether the session length is working. If your notes keep saying "ran out of time" or "rushed the plan for next week", the session is too short. If the last fifteen minutes keep drifting, it may be too long.
In Another Session, each session has its own notes, and the client record keeps every past note in order, so you can read the last one in a minute before the next session starts.
Stay with one length once you have chosen it
Clients find a regular length easier to plan around, and you find it easier to price. If you offer more than one length, give each a clear name and price, such as a 30-minute check-in and a 60-minute session, and say which one a client is booking.
When a session regularly overruns, treat that as information rather than generosity. Either the session needs to be longer, and priced as such, or the plan for each session needs to be smaller.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a typical life coaching session?
Usually 45 to 60 minutes. Many life coaches hold a longer first session of up to 90 minutes, then 60-minute sessions weekly or every two weeks.
Is 30 minutes long enough for a coaching session?
Yes, for a focused check-in, a single agreed topic or a young child. For most adults, 30 minutes is too short to explore a problem and plan next steps, so it works best between longer sessions.
Why are some coaching sessions 50 minutes instead of 60?
A 50-minute session fits a one-hour calendar slot and leaves ten minutes to write notes and reset before the next client. Therapists have used the same pattern for decades.
How long should a first coaching session be?
Often 60 to 90 minutes. The first session covers background, goals and how you will work together, which usually takes longer than a regular session.
How often should coaching sessions happen?
Weekly or every two weeks is common. Shorter sessions suit weekly meetings; less frequent meetings usually need a full hour.
Should I charge more for a 90-minute session?
Yes. Price longer sessions in proportion to the time, and list each length with its own price so clients know what they are booking.
