How much do piano lessons cost?

In the US, independent music teachers charged a median of $60 for a 60-minute lesson in 2024, about $30 for 30 minutes. In the UK, the Musicians’ Union recommends at least £45.50 an hour for private teaching, or £22.75 for 30 minutes. Prices rise with experience, city size and longer lessons.

The short answer in the US and the UK

Two organisations publish reliable figures for private music lessons. Neither publishes a figure for piano alone, so these are rates for private music lessons in general, including piano.

  • United States: median $60, average $65.72 for 60 minutes

  • United Kingdom: at least £45.50 an hour

Piano lesson prices by lesson length

Most piano teachers sell 30, 45 or 60-minute lessons. The MU says its hourly rate should be applied pro rata to shorter lessons. The figures below are our arithmetic from each source.

Thirty minutes is the usual length for young children and beginners. Students preparing for graded exams or playing longer pieces often move to 45 or 60 minutes.

  • US, 30 minutes: about $30

Half of the MTNA median of $60 an hour.

  • US, 45 minutes: about $45

    Three quarters of the median.

  • US, 60 minutes: $60 median, $65.72 average

How piano lesson prices have changed since 2005

The average hourly rate rose by about half between 2005 and 2024. Adjusted for inflation, it barely moved. The MTNA calculates that $43 in 2005 equals $69.54 in 2024 money, so the 2024 average of $65.72 is slightly lower in real terms than in 2005.

In the UK, the MU minimum rose from £40.50 an hour for 2023 to 2024 to £45.50 in its May 2026 update.

What changes the price of piano lessons

  • Where you live

The MTNA survey compares rates by community size, and teachers in larger cities generally charge more. The MU rate does not include regional cost of living, which it says should be added on top.

  • The teacher’s experience

The MU says its rates do not reflect experience level, which should also be negotiated on top. A teacher with a performance degree or decades of exam results will usually charge above the minimum.

  • Travel

Lessons in the student’s home take the teacher’s travel time. The MU advises increasing the rate when travel is unusually long.

  • Group lessons

Small groups cost each student less, but the MU says the teacher’s rate should rise with the number of students.

What a year of piano lessons costs

Many teachers charge by the term or month rather than per lesson. These are our own sums, assuming 36 lessons in a school year.

The rest of the cost is the instrument, books and exam fees, which vary too much to average. A teacher can usually suggest a suitable instrument for a beginner.

  • US, weekly 30-minute lessons at $30: $1,080 a year

    About $90 a month over a twelve-month payment plan.

  • UK, weekly 30-minute lessons at £22.75: £819 a year

At the MU minimum. Most teachers in large towns charge more.

  • US, weekly 60-minute lessons at $60: $2,160 a year

    Typical for an advanced student.

What the lesson fee pays for

The MU explains that its rates include the costs of being self-employed: holiday pay, sick pay, pension contributions and parental leave. A private teacher has none of these provided by an employer.

The fee also covers time the student never sees: planning, choosing music, writing practice notes, and messages with parents. The MTNA survey found that most teachers keep students for years, with 52.1% saying their average student had been with them six to ten years.

Setting your fee as a piano teacher

In the UK, treat £45.50 an hour as the floor, then add for your experience, your area and any travel. In the US, the MTNA median of $60 is the middle of the market, not a minimum. Publish one price per lesson length so every family pays the same. Our guide to what to charge for private lessons covers the reasoning.
